Manufacturing FDA compliant custom moulded rubber

What is FDA approved rubber?

The US-based Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for protecting the public health of American citizens by regulating a wide range of products, including foods, human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products, medical devices for human use, radiation-emitting electronic products, cosmetics, dietary supplements, and tobacco products. FDA standards have become the de facto benchmark globally for all food grade rubber.

All FDA approved rubber products are handled and packaged in a certified cleanroom environment. They are also subjected to rigorous testing to meet the demands of even the most challenging hygienic applications. FDA approved rubber should be tasteless, odourless and resistant to bacteria. It should also provide reliable service across a wide range of operational temperatures. FDA rubber must also be non-toxic and non-allergenic.

FDA approved rubber materials

The following FDA approved rubber materials are among the most commonly used in hygienic applications due to their exemplary characteristics.

EPDM

EPDM is employed in applications requiring durability and flexibility. Manufactured from tasteless and odourless compounds, EPDM is suitable for speciality or general purpose food and beverage applications. It has an operating temperature of -50°C to +150°C and performs well with hot water and steam.

FFKM (Perfluoroelastomers)

FFKM’s extreme chemical and temperature resistance has seen it employed in high pressure clean in place (CIP) cleaning and sterilisation processes in the food, beverage and dairy industries. This food grade rubber material has an operational temperature range of -15°C to +300°C and best in class chemical resistance.

Neoprene

Neoprene’s smooth finish, excellent resistance to abrasion and repulsion of oily and greasy food products make it an ideal food grade rubber material. Resistant to ozone, sunlight and oxygen ageing, neoprene is the material of choice for refrigeration seals. Neoprene is also highly resistant to water and the build-up of mould.

Silicone

Silicone has long been highly regarded in the food and beverage industry for its thermal stability, heat resistance, low chemical reactivity and low toxicity. This long-life food grade rubber has one of the widest operating temperature ranges available, from -50°C to +200°C. Common uses include sealants and cooking utensils.

High-performance FDA rubber components

TRP Polymer Solutions designs and manufactures high-performance rubber moulded components, including food grade ‘O’ rings and gaskets, made from FDA approved rubber materials. We only use the best materials and process technologies when manufacturing FDA rubber, including the aforementioned high-grade materials.

Those are just a few of the FDA approved rubber materials that we use to develop optimised food grade gaskets and ‘O’ rings at TRP Polymer Solutions. New Yorker Electronics releases Long-Life DC Link Capacitors from Cornell Dubilier Electronics (CDE)

NORTHVALE, New Jersey, USA – New Yorker Electronics has announced its release of the Cornell Dubilier Electronics new BLH series film capacitors optimized for inverter DC Link Applications. CDE’s BLH series of DC Link capacitors have been designed and tested to exceed the industry’s most stringent requirements for high humidity, vibration testing and thermal cycling.

Green energy and electric transportation systems have pushed explosive growth in inverter markets. Many of these applications present harsh operating environments for power electronics circuitry. Often, these applications demand a high percentage of uptime, increasing the need for highly reliable components.

The Temperature, Humidity at Bias (THB) test exposes parts to the harsh conditions of 85 °C at 85% relative humidity with rated voltage applied. This demanding test simulates the harsh operating conditions encountered in many commercial and industrial inverter applications. Such conditions can cause non-THB rated capacitors to fail early from moisture penetration. While most capacitor makers validate their THB components for 1,000 hours under these conditions, CDE’s BLH series has been validated for 1,500 hours.

Utilizing the most advanced materials and processes, these board mounted capacitors have been designed and tested to meet the rigors of automotive AEC-Q200 testing. Their solvent-resistant plastic case and epoxy encapsulation systems is UL Recognized and meet IEC61071. Tin-plated copper RoHS-compliant terminations ensure excellent solderability. With their superior resistance to moisture and robust design, these capacitors are well suited for solar, wind, UPS, EV chargers, and other inverter applications that may be subjected to wide-ranging environmental conditions.

The series is optimized for DC link applications in medium to high-power inverters. Capacitance ranges from 1.0 to 170 µF at 450-1,200 Vdc, with high rms ripple current ratings up to 36 Arms. When operated at a 70 °C hot-spot temperature with rated voltage applied, their life expectancy is 100,000 hours. Available with 2- or 4-pin, the film capacitors have a 10% tolerance standard with 5% optional.

The case material is a UL94V-0 plastic and the terminal material is tin plated copper for best solderability. They range in size from 32mm L x 18mm H x 9mm W to as much as 57.5mm L x 80mm H x 35mm W.

As a franchise distributor, New Yorker Electronics supplies Cornell Dubilier Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors, AC Oil Filled Capacitors, DC Oil Filled Capacitors, Film Capacitors, MICA Capacitors, Ultracapacitors, Surface Mount Capacitors, Aluminum Polymer Capacitors, Supercapacitors, plus Capacitor Hardware and Capacitor Kits.

New Low-Capacitance ESD Protection Array for High Speed Data & Audio Interfaces Released by New York

NORTHVALE, New Jersey, USA – New Yorker Electronics has announced its release of the new Amazing Microelectronic Corp. (AMC) AZ1015-02N Low-Capacitance ESD Protection TVS Array for High-Speed Data Interfaces. The device is used for Audio Interface, Monitor and Flat Panel Display, USB2.0 and SIM Ports. The multifaceted AZ1015-02N maintains low surge clamping voltage for ESD/EOS Protection, low capacitance to keep signal integrity and offers varying integration techniques to reduce cost.

The AMC AZ1015-02N ESD Protection device is a high performance design which includes surge-rated diode arrays to protect high-speed data interfaces. The AZ1015-02N has been specifically designed to protect sensitive components that are connected to data and transmission lines, from over-voltage caused by Electrostatic Discharging (ESD), Electrical Fast Transients (EFT) and lightning.

AZ1015-02N is a unique design which includes surge-rated, low-capacitance steering diodes and unique design of clamping cell which is an equivalent TVS diode in a single package. During transient conditions, the steering diodes direct the transient to either the power supply line or to the ground line. The internal unique design of clamping cell prevents overvoltage on the power line, protecting any downstream components.

This low-capacitance ESD Protection Array is designed to protect two data lines and power rails from transient overvoltage (such as ESD stress pulse). When ESD voltage pulse appears on the data line, the ESD pulse current will be conducted by AZ1015-02N away from the USB controller chip, even when the pulse appears on the VBUS of the USB port. Therefore, the data lines and VBUS of the two ports are completely protected with this device. With regard to audio interference, the ESD pulse current will be discharged, thus completely protecting the right/left channels of the audio chip.
